Three Top Small Business New Year Resolutions

Some New Year resolutions are useful, others are downright harmful. What’s the difference?

For some reason, negative resolutions are harder to keep. When you give up on them, you feel bad about yourself, and it’s tough running a business effectively wearing a hair shirt! It’s much easier to keep positive resolutions. When you achieve your goals you feel good about yourself, and when you’re confident and happy you’re in the right head space for success.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming practitioners know it: positive thinking goes a long way towards getting what we want out of life. So don’t resolve to give things up. The last thing you need is to be kicking yourself up the backside throughout January! Resolve to do more of the good stuff instead.

Here’s three positive resolutions to give your small business a New Year boost.

  1. don’t resolve to be less disorganised. Decide to be more organised instead. The end result is the same but it’s easier to get there when you give it a positive slant. If being organised doesn’t come naturally, diary an hour a week to do your filing, delete or file or archive emails and get your admin in good order
  2. don’t resolve to hunt down the people who owe you money like a modern day Ming the Merciless. Being nasty makes us feel nasty. Resolve to call your debtors for a friendly chat instead, breaking our natural British reluctance to talk about money and letting in the fresh, frank air. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at the results
  3. don’t resolve to take on less of the business you dislike. Resolve to take on more of the business you enjoy… which is usually the most profitable stuff! Instead of leaving it to chance, plan your New Year marketing bearing in mind the customers you most want to attract. Aim your communications squarely at your target market, fulfilling their needs. Get someone who knows their stuff to take a dispassionate look at your website and let you know where it can be improved. Advertise where your target market congregates…
