Less talk, more action... make time and work harder and smarter
Why did you start a small business? Most people want to spend more time with family, choose their own hours and work less. But in reality too many of us end up working way too hard.
Some of us let things slide because we're really bad at saying 'no' to silly deadlines, worried we'll lose business. Some are workaholics who can't resist the siren call of the nose-to-grindstone approach. Others just get bogged down in administration.
Whatever the reason, it's good to take stock and grab back control of your life whenever things start to get out of hand. The positive side of things, whether you're a sole trader or small business, is that it's relatively easy to rebel!
Think back to the reasons why you jumped ship in the first place. If they're still important to you, here's three tips for getting what you want out of your small business and your life:
- Work outside normal business hours instead of 9-5. This can work particularly well if you're a natural night owl, an habitual early bird or have no pressing family demands
- Remember you're the boss. Set yourself an 8 hour day maximum and stick to it. Delegate the bits you dislike to someone you trust
- Manage expectations by politely refusing to meet unreasonable deadlines. You'll probably find most people are perfectly happy to wait a little. If they aren't, ask yourself if they're worth having... Bearing in mind you left full time employment for an easier life!
