To be or not to be.....
What do artists, pigs and Santa have in common?
They are all people I've met networking in that last 2 years....more on the pigs later!
When you start networking there are a few things you can almost guarantee:
- If it's a breakfast meeting the food is likely to be poor and it's generally advisable to avoid the eggs
- Every meeting will have a printer, mortgage advisor, website person, coach and accountant...all telling you how they are very different from their competitors
- If it's a 'non exclusive' gathering' then there will be at least 3 Utility Warehouse people there...all with their ubiquitous pig business cards.
What you can also be guaranteed of is that you will meet lots of people doing every kind of business you can imagine...especially in Brighton where it's more acceptable than most other places to have a stab at any business you like, no matter how obscure, and people will genuinely wish you well.
In the last 2 years I've probably met at least 400 people through networking; some on multiple occasions and some only once or twice.
I've asked some of those people to contribute a guest blog post about something they are knowledgeable about on a variety of subjects that have some things in common with what I do, but often nothing at all.
The first post is by Michael Keilthy who's the Sales Director at MiStore. I met the MiStore team at the Brighton and Hove business show in October 2009, just when I'd decided I wanted a new website and my new website launched at the end of May. Michael's post is about good solid tips for startups and people looking to get better web presence.
